The inception of the Epiphany Initiative Foundation started when Founder and President Donte Henry and Vice President Mateo Restrepo reflected after graduating postsecondary on their upbringing, influenced greatly through the vehicle of sport.
The two were gifted athletes who faced adversity with limited financial resources as their parents would often struggle to pay for registration fees and sports equipment, such as cleats. They decided that it was unfair that competitive sports were mainly inaccessible to children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
This led to the creation of the Epiphany Initiative Foundation, a non-profit-organization that provides children with a platform and an opportunity to participate in sports without worrying about the financial burden of having to pay. The two plan on sponsoring these young athletes through government grants, fundraising events and donations from donors and supporters.
Donte and Mateo were both members of the Canadian National Team and Toronto FC Academy. They have developed an extensive network of previous teammates and individuals through their academic and athletic journeys. They have created a vast network of friends and prior teammates that are professional athletes — many who were raised in underserved communities and were once in the position of the very same children we wish to help. The two have recruited them as mentors and envision them helping young student-athletes navigate their aspirations.
